Fellow art librarians,
This turn of the list-conversation to salaries is so important. Most
(huge percentage, i think) of public school librarians make a lot more
than those of us at the college level do-and for a 38 week year. Because
of the unions, their salaries have been increased a lot over the years.
About 7 or 8 years ago, our local paper published the salaries of the
librarians and some teacher levels, at a number of the local school
districts here in mid-coast Maine. Keeping in mind that Maine has some
of the lowest salaries in the country, I was astonished to see that my
contemporaries at both middle school and high schools here were all
making in the very high 40's..not the 20's where I had imagined those
salaries were. It continues to shock me that we can see ads for library
positions in New York City or LA, which require 2 masters degrees, 3
slavic languages, managerial skills, computer expertise, experience,
and the offered salary is at $24K. It is absurd to say the least.
Thanks for the chance to vent! It would be great to get this on
someone's agenda who could do something about it...
