First, I want to say I was shocked to find out the fate of the Museum of
Contemporary Art Library: a position for a one-day-a-week librarian that
remains open!
Second, most of us are in the same boat: lay-offs, frozen positions, no
money for expansion, etc.
Here is a brief summary of the responses I received. It is interesting to
note how consistent the staffing levels are for mid-size libraries (like
mine).
Staffing at Museum Libraries (reflects staffing levels as of January 2002)
smaller libraries (10,000-30,000 volumes) (3 responses):
at least 1 full-time Librarian:
one library had one other Librarian plus a part-time library assistant
one library had several interns and volunteers
(one library had just the 1 Librarian)
mid-size libraries (50,000-60,000 volumes) (3 responses):
1 full-time Librarian and 1 permanent full-time library assistant
plus either volunteers or a part-time library assistant
large library (150,000 volumes) (1 response):
4 full-time Librarians, 2 part-time librarians
plus 4 full-time library assistants, and 20 volunteers
Thank you all for your responses. I hope others find this info useful.
