Kay Teel's answer to cataloging question was very impressive. I've copied it
for future reference. Thanks.
I have a quick and dirty addition. There is a software program that allows
you access to the catalog records of collections that are z39.50 compatible.
These records are downloadable through the import module of many library
database software. The records have Dewey, LC, and local call numbers listed
with the descriptive cataloging frequently. What is particularly nice, is
you can select libraries to search that have similar collections to your own.
For example, I had a large collection of structural steel publications so
used libraries in the Pittsburgh area (Carnegie Public, I think, was great)
for those. For civil engineering I used MIT and other academic institutions.
Anyway, it helps to have a record to modify - and you can use other staff to
copy catalog. This software is called BookWhere and it cost, a couple of
years ago, about $150. I have the phone number somewhere here but not at my
finger tips. If you don't find them in a google.com search, email me and
I'll look for the number.
