Hi Maurya,
ARLIS/UK & Ireland has a recent publication on cataloging exhibition
catalogs, which I understand is an excellent resource. The citation for it
is on their website:
http://arlis.nal.vam.ac.uk/publ/publ.html#Guidelines_art_exhibitions
You might be able to find it in your library or on interlibrary loan.
There are also draft guidelines for cataloging exhibition catalogs that the
ARLIS/NA Cataloging Advisory Committee has been working on for far too long
(my fault, as I'm the one who's been working on them!). You might find it
useful:
http://www.stanford.edu/%7Ekteel/guidelines_intro.html
It's currently arranged by MARC tag (with links to the major sections on
Main Entry and Subject Headings).
For subject analysis following Library of Congress guidelines, you should
read the _Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings_ documents:
H1148 (Pattern Headings: Art),
H1250 (Art and Fine Art), and
H1255 (Artistic photography). Other memos frequently needed for art
publications are:
H1360 (Catalogs),
H1427 (Collections of objects), and
H1593 (Exhibitions).
The "SCM" manual is available on Cataloger's Desktop, and as a printed
manual from the Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution Service.
As far as I know, there is not a current guide on how to assign Library of
Congress N schedule classification. (Many art libraries don't use LC
classification.) There was a workshop at the ARLIS conference in Los
Angeles that talked about this, and the summary of it (including a link to
exercises) can be found here:
http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/9783/arlisna/classif.html
It has been in the back of my mind to develop a Demystification of the N
schedule sometime. If you use the N schedule and have any questions about
it, please don't hesitate to contact me!
The ARLIS/NA Cataloging Section website is located at:
http://www.stanford.edu/%7Ekteel/arliscat.htm
and it has some links you might find useful, as well as an overview of the
changes to art subject headings implemented by LC in February 2001.
And of course, ARLIS-L is a great resource of colleagues, and I know from
experience that ARLIS catalogers welcome the opportunity to answer
cataloging questions!
Hope this helps,
Kay Teel
