About ALA not listing our conferences in their publications:
Back when I was on the Board, I was asked to go to ALA midwinter to attend
the "Affiliated Societies" meeting as an ARLIS/NA rep. (since ALA was
meeting in nearby San Antonio that year). This (getting our conferences
listed in their calendar section) was one of the issues we and other
affiliated societies brought up at that meeting. The answer we were given
was that there just was not enough space in their calendar sections to list
all of their affiliated society conferences. At that time they had a
policy in place to only list ALA activities, the meetings of ALA chapters
(state library organizations), and meetings of ALA subgroups. I've not
looked at their web page, but perhaps space is not an issue there and
perhaps they could link to us there?
Another issue that was brought up was the lack of a place at ALA
conferences for affiliated societies to place brochures & other
information. Basically we were told that we could get together as
affiliated societies and jointly rent a booth at the exhibits and solve the
problem that way. Someone would obviously have to set up the booth....
None of the affiliated societies seemed too keen on that idea. The ALA
rep. (who had indeed heard of ARLIS/NA) promissed to provide feedback about
this to ALA management, but I never heard back from her and since I had to
get busy with the ARLIS/NA San Antonio conference I never got back in touch
with her either.
Perhaps NARC committee members can revisit these issue.
As far as image is concerned: back when I was on the Cultural Diversity
Committee (now Diversity Committee) we wanted to see the production of
brochures with diverse images of art & architecture librarians that we
could use for outreach. Funding concerns prevented this at the time, and
some members thought that ALA should be doing this (at least as far as
outreach to junior & high school students was concerned). I still think
that its a good idea and we should now be able to get around the printing
cost issue by producing an electronic brochure.
In any case, this is just to say that some of these issues have been
discussed in the past by the ARLIS/NA Board, by committees, and/or task
forces. Unfortunately we can't force others to publish info. about us if
they don't want to! On the other hand---maybe its time for some energetic
members to form a group to work on these issues...
Best,
Janine Henri
