Dear Ray Anne and ARLISers: I think this is a great idea! While in
graduate school (just a year ago) I was thinking about starting a student
chapter, but wasn't sure there would be enough people to support one. Once
I started talking about it though, I was surprised at how many people came
out of the woodwork. I think there are many more people getting their MLS
who are considering art/architecture librarianship and/or VR curatorial
work than we realize.
Students get discouraged for a variety of reasons. Quite often people shy
away from art librarianship as they have the impression they MUST have a
Master's in Art History, in addition to their MLS (that's a popular
one). Many people just haven't had much exposure to the field. Having
active student chapters could really help dispel the myths and clarify just
what the profession is about. Perhaps ARLIS could come up with some
guidelines for starting student chapters?
Best,
Heather

How many library schools have heard of ARLIS/NA? That's where the future
librarians are! I am thinking of beginning a student chapter at U of Pitt, but
need to talk about that with other art librarians via ARLIS-L and at the
conference to see if anyone else has done it and how to go about doing it.
