Message to the Membership
Elizabeth Clarke
Executive Director
Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA)
January 2002
Best wishes for a "Very Healthy and Happy Year 2002" to you from me, your
Executive Director; the staff from Clarke Association Management Services
and all of our business affiliates that work in support of ARLIS/NA and its
products!
ARLIS/NA members have experienced many wonderful accomplishments over the
past year as well as some very heartfelt challenges. Through it all, your
colleagues have shared joy in good times and sincere sympathy when tragedy
struck. This past year has done much to heighten the bonds of good
friends and colleagues and help us understand how strong we really are.
ARLIS/NA members look forward to renewing old acquaintances in St. Louis in
March and to meeting new friends. Membership renewals are coming in at a
fast and furious pace. Inquiries regarding the upcoming joint VRA -
ARLIS/NA conference in March are being fielded daily by staff and the
Executive together. It is very evident that ARLIS/NA remains healthy and
vibrant into the New Year and its members look forward to supporting the
society for the upcoming months.
I will update you on some of the day-to-day more routine accomplishments of
your society:
Financial Management
The financial manager, Bonnie James continues to work with Trudy Jacoby to
improve the financial reporting of the society. Trudy and Bonnie have fine
tuned the budgeting process and are in the process of finalizing the
figures for the St. Louis conference in March. Reporting is done monthly
to the Executive Board and as you can well imagine, with membership
renewals coming in coupled with VRA and ARLIS/NA members and exhibitors
registrations for the joint conference, the finance office is bustling at
this time of year!
During the conference week in St. Louis, your Executive Board will meet to
discuss the year ahead for ARLIS/NA and new officers will be appointed to
various positions. Bonnie James will be present this year to meet the
members of the Executive Board face to face and to meet the members
themselves. It will be a great opportunity for Bonnie to put some faces
and names together and to be able to discuss in person some of the
innovative ideas that members provide on a regular basis. I know that she
is looking forward to that opportunity.
List Serves, Web Site and On-Line Services
Despite the fact that Derek Crosley - our loyal webmaster and technical
support manager - longs for a home on the ocean in Nova Scotia - he
continues to support the wants and needs of the ARLIS/NA staff and members.
Although our firm has only supported the administrative operations of
ARLIS/NA for a little less than two years, Derek considers ARLIS/NA to be
a group of very good friends. He strives to do a "great" job and truly
understands the commitment of the members of the Executive Board and staff.
Derek prefers to keep a low profile and works away quietly on projects
that many of us don't really understand - far too technical! But we do
know that without his expertise, we would be in a fix. Thanks Derek for
your loyal and cheerful support.
Publications
In January of this year, Clarke Association Management Services has taken
on more responsibility in supporting the revenue generation connected with
the production of publications. Elizabeth and her staff will manage all of
the advertising opportunities for ARLIS/NA's publications. This process
will begin immediately. If you know of any organizations that wish to
advertise in this year's Art Doc, Update or conference publications, please
have them contact the Headquarters.
ARLIS/NA Handbook
Vicky Roper, ARLIS/NA's administrator has completed the initial design and
development of our new database and the updates will be made in this year's
membership renewal process. When the 2002 members' handbook is produced
this year, internally, we will experience a much smoother process than in
the past. Externally, we hope you will see an accurate and timely
publication that will provide you with a reference guide that you will
refer to often. During the Executive Board meeting in February, concrete
plans for this year's production will be finalized.
VRA/ARLIS/NA Joint Conference - 2002
It is almost impossible to imagine that our first VRA/ARLIS/NA Joint
conference will be held in a little more than two months! The wonderful
St. Louis Hyatt Regency hotel at Union Station will be the venue for this
conference.
Registration is being accepted by Susan Rawlyk on-line now at
http://www.arlisna.org/Conf2002 or at the joint conference website at
http://library.wustl.edu/~beth/Conference.html or the VRA website at
http://www.VRAweb.org . Details of the conference are also found on the
joint conference website.
Your paper mailing of the preliminary program should arrive on your desk in
the very near future. We look forward seeing you all in St. Louis. As a
very preliminary count, to date we have 20+ exhibitors registered for the
conference. I believe that this is more than we had last year at this time!
We look forward to renewing old acquaintances first made in Los Angeles and
to meeting new members in St. Louis!
Respectfully submitted by:
Elizabeth A. Clarke
