Dear Colleagues:
My understanding is that the topic - with all of its ramifications - will be
an agenda item at the ALA Education Assembly on Monday, January 21st at
Midwinters in New Orleans.
As current Past Chair of the Collection Management and Development Section
of ALA/ALCTS, as well as a member of ARLIS/NA, I do hope that we see a
united front from all of our various library associations on this issue.

Because, ALA has NEER been an advocate for librarIANS, only libraries
(implication = political power of ALA officers and select library
DIRECTORS).

WE NEED TO SEND OUR OWN LETTERS and encourage ARLIS/NA Executive Board to
send
one now!
I am sending my own letter today. And it will include a brief statement as
to
the requirements needed to be the head of a departmental academic library
today
and what my salary is after 32 years in the profession VS. what my sister's
title, requirements and salary are!! She makes MUCH more than I do with
only ONE
year of college (not even a BA!!), excellent secretarial and organizational
skills that she learned in various positions, word-processing, and NO
foreign
languages. She is the administrative assistant (secretarial, receptionist,
conference planning) for the President of a hi tech company!
If we SAY we value EDUCATION and INFORMATION we, as a country, need to put
our
money where our mouths are or quit giving it lip service. Ray Anne Lockard
