I've noticed regular emails from GORDON's promoting their products under the
guise of special news for ARLIS members, even requested by ARLIS members.
This is a creative form of advertising, but I think ARLIS ListeServe
messages should be edited if the commercial members continue to use it as a
selling platform. For example, it's general knowledge by now that MAYER
(art auction records) is no longer publishing in print or CD-Rom or online.
In fact, the electronic rights to Mayer are owned by Artprice.com. Yet, the
sales pitch from Gordon's makes it appear as if there are really only one
remaining choice, Hislop's Art Sales Index. The other fact is that the
Artprice.com CD-ROM for all fine arts is far and away the largest and most
comprehensive at 2.45 million records....and it costs far less, too.
These are just objective and factual comments. As an art reference
publisher who for more than 20 years has appreciate the input of ARLIS
membership, I continue to believe that our members have more than enough
common sense and ability to determine the truth about each product. This is
why the reviews in Art Doc are so valuable, as is the word-of-mouth between
ARLIS users of these products. Quality and an comprehensive academic
approach to publishing speaks for itself. So, I don't think List Serve
should be abused as a free advertising medium that clogs our email.
This was my very first email to List Serve. And that's all I have to say on
the subject.
Happy New Year to all of our ARLIS friends and colleagues.
