Allow me to be the second to respond to this request.
The Edmund L. and Nancy K. Dubois Library at San Diego's Museum of
Photographic Arts is definitely recently-born, and is evolving.
The Museum recently undertook a major expansion quadrupling its old space
and reopened its doors in Spring, 2000. Fairly early in the planning
process, a significant gift of monographs and journals, primarily devoted to
photography, was offered to the Museum. The collection proved too good to
resist and the Dubois Library came into being. In addition to the
significant founding collection there was the small museum reference
collection from before, and subsequent donations have added to the size and
breadth of the collection. With the arrival of the final installment of the
founding gift, we'll have something in the neighborhood of 20 thousand
volumes.
We're housed in a space that includes a main reading/stacks area, two
special collections rooms, plus two staff workstations that double as a
reference desk. Space issues already are high on the list of concerns.
Once the last of the shelving is built and the final items of the founding
gift arrive we will be very close to being out of space--a good thing from
the standpoint of having a strong starting collectiong, but undesirable from
the standpoint of needing to accomodate material either off-site or in other
areas of the museum.
The library currently is available for use by our curators of photograhy,
film, and education. We will in the future welcome scholars and the public
to use our collection on-site during regular open hours, but are currently
open by appointment only. Cataloging has begun but it will be "a while"
before the collection will be processed. We will be mounting our catalog on
the web once there is a critical mass of material in it. The library is a
new program for the museum and is currently lightly staffed. We hope to be
able to grow the staffing to better serve the needs of the patrons.
Various other facilities/non-facilities details that might be of interest:
-- The library has begun using the NH classification for its photography
books and standard LC clasification for the rest of the materials
-- The Museum holds archival material for photographer/filmmaker Louis Clyde
(Lou) Stoumen, and the library maintains material other than the prints,
negatives, and films
-- While no grand edge-defining programs were planned for at the beginning,
attention was paid to provide a wiring infrastructure that would support
placing workstations in many locations throughout the public space
Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
