ARLIS-L members,
(Long email, but important information)
I want to thank everyone who had sent in their opinions on the most recent
change to the list regarding the reply-to option. Now it is time to let
you all know about further changes that I have to make to the list. First
let me explain why these changes have to be made.
ARLIS-L has been running on an email system that will no longer be in use
by my institution as of November 1. For about the past two months myself
and my support and back-up moderator have been discussing the best way to
change the list settings to accommodate the change in email system. The
changes we make will also finally change all messages that you get with
Mary's name on it to my name. So there's one small benefit of these
changes. In addition, please know that the changes I make should have a
very minor effect on how you use the list, most of the changes will effect
me as list moderator.
Due to the change in email systems, all ARLIS-L mail will come directly to
me in the email system that I use on a regular basis at work. With this in
mind, we have tried to find a way to keep the list a moderated list without
me constantly getting ARLIS-L mail during the day. So with the changes
that I will make here's is what is going to happen:
Requests for subscription on the list will come to me and I will add the
requester to the list. Currently, this happens automatically. In addition
we are going to make the list private, meaning that ONLY subscribers can
post to the list. I don't think this will be too much of a problem, since
most people using the list are on it. But, BE ADVISED, if your institution
changes your email address, even in a minor way, ARLIS-L will not recognize
your new address and your post will come back to you and not be posted. To
prevent this, you can send me an email about your change in address and I
can update it for you. Finally, new members will be set on an automatic
"review" status. In other words, their postings will have to be reviewed
by me before being distributed to the list. Once the new member is found
to be legit, I can change their status.
What does this mean for you? Well, I will no longer be reviewing ALL
ARLIS-L mail before it gets posted. This will now happen
automatically. The only exception is for new members. This precaution is
set up so I can catch people who might subscribe to the list only to post
unwanted advertisements or spam. For people who are not members their
postings will be rejected. This new process is also why I requested your
permission in changing the reply-to function to sender rather than the
list. I am also a subscriber to the list myself, so if I do feel that
someone is abusing the system, I can set them to "review" status at any
time. So I will still be keeping an eye on things.
Because of the short window of time, this change HAS to happen before
November 1, I want to give everyone time to read this and think it over. I
will make these changes on Tuesday Oct. 30. Between now and then, if you
have any questions, or if something isn't quite clear, please feel free to
email or call me, or if you just want to make sure your email address is
correct in the database, I'd be happy to check on that for you as well.
I think these changes will work well and after they have taken effect and
we see how they go we can try making modifications is necessary.
Also, would the person in charge of the ARLIS/NA web site and the editor of
Update please contact me.
Thanks so much for everyone's understanding as we move through this process.
