TALYA BAHARAL EXHIBIT, "SKIN FORMS," OPENS AT WOMEN'S STUDIO WORKSHOP
GALLERY
A collection of work by artist Talya Baharal, "Skin Forms," opens October
28, 2001, at the Gallery of the Women's Studio Workshop, 722 Binnewater
Lane, Rosendale, New York. An opening party will be held October 28,
2:00-4:00pm. Both events are free and open to the public.
Baharal has created pieces from over-beaten flax stretched over steel
armatures, designed to investigate the oneness of jewelry and sculpture.
"Issues of sculpture and scale, of anthropological significance, and of
concealed life stories of the wearer emanate from within the pieces,"
Baharal says of her art. "Also relevant is the evolution of the meaning of
'precious,' and the aesthetics of vulnerability and decay. This is jewelry
that has lived, and, having lived, been transformed."
The work in the exhibit is divided into three groups. "Ceilings" is
comprised of large-scale suspended neckpiece forms. "Table" is a display of
small jewelry objects. "Wall" is a collection of shadow boxes with steel
wire jewelry sketches, embedded in abaca, a mulberry paper.
Baharal, a self-taught artist, founded her own jewelry company in 1986. She
was a featured designer in the jewelry department of Saks Fifth Avenue, and
her work was featured in prestigious publications, including "Elle,"
"Vogue," "Bazaar," and "The New York Times." Her work has recently been
exhibited at Obsidian Gallery, Tucson, Arizona; Good Goods, Setauket,
Michigan; Boulder Coop Art Gallery, Boulder, Colorado; Society of
Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Kohler Art Center, Sheboygan,
Michigan, and included in a number of juried craft shows, including American
Craft Council, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Smithsonian Craft Show and
American Craft Expo. She is co-owner of Baharal-Gnida Designs, a limited
production metal and jewelry studio, whose unique jewelry and sculpture are
in selected galleries in the United States and Europe, and in many private
collections.
Talya Baharal's exhibit, "Skin Forms," runs through November 23. Gallery
hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 5:00pm, and weekends by
appointment. For additional information, call Women's Studio Workshop at
