Hello All,
I would like to announce two additions to the Digital Library for the
Decorative Arts and Material Culture, available at
http://libtext.library.wisc.edu/DLDecArts/ .
Two architectural pattern books by William Pain are provided in the
Digital Library. We have recently added Pain's British Palladio: or the
Builder's General Assistant London: 1788. The British Palladio and the
Practical House Carpenter (also in the Digital Library) helped to
popularize the Adams Style in Great Britain and America during the late
eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Both texts contain tables
showing prices for labor and materials.
The Temple of Flora: or Garden of the Botanist, Poet, Painter and
Philosopher is the third and final part of Robert John Thornton's New
Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus van Linnaeus. This project
was to consist of 90 prints, compiled with explanations by Thornton.
Thornton, a physician who received a considerable inheritance upon the
death of his parents, bankrupted himself in the process and could not
finish the work. This 1812 quarto edition from the Chipstone Collection
was originally published to raise funds for the completion of the
project. It was printed in color using a variety of techniques -
aquatint, mezzotint, stipple and line engraving - and finished by hand.
The original paintings for the edition were produced by several artists,
including Peter Henderson, Philip Reinagle, Abraham Pether and Sydenham
Edwards. The illustration of roses was painted by Thornton. More
interesting for its artistic rather than scientific merit, the Temple of
Flora is a landmark of romantic idealism.
With the electronic pageturner, users of the Web site can browse more
than 1000 digital facsimiles of color plates and text or they may search
for specific terms and pages. The page images are accessible in three
sizes: one for quick browsing, another suitable for printing, and a
third for examining fine details.
I hope you find this resource useful. These are the last additions I
will be making to the collection, though there should be exciting
additions soon. I am leaving my position at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison to begin new adventures in art librarianship at
Princeton University.
Best to all,
Cate Cooney
