American artists
Forwarded from Laura Gutiérrez Witt--
As you know, Latin Americans are a strong force in contemporary art. We
wanted to let you know about "Art:21 - Art in the Twenty First Century," a
new series airing on PBS the weekends of September 21st and September 28th
(check local listings for specific days and times). This program features
prominent Latins working in art today.
Pepón Osorio, best known for large-scale installations, was born in
Santurce, Puerto Rico. He was educated at the Universidad Inter-Americana in
Puerto Rico and Herbert H. Lehman College in New York, and received an MA
from Columbia University in 1985. Osorio¹s pieces, influenced by his
experience as a social worker in The Bronx, usually evolve from an
interaction with the neighborhoods and people among which he is working. ³My
principal commitment as an artist is to return art to the community,² said
Osorio. For instance, "El Chandelier" was response to several large
chandeliers hanging in the lobby of a poverty-ridden building of housing
projects in New York's Lower East Side.
The final version of our website will launch September 4th at
http://www.pbs.org/art21. We¹d love to be included as a link or web resource
on your site, or in an email newsletter, after our official launch.
As the first broadcast series to focus exclusively on contemporary visual
art and artists in America, "Art:21 - Art in the Twenty-First Century,"
airing the the weekends of September 21st and September 28th on PBS, offers
a unique glimpse into twenty-one artists' personal experiences, sources of
inspiration, and creative processes - revealed candidly in their own words.
There are a variety of ways Art:21 can bring our audience to you, and you
can use the Art:21 series to create interest regarding contemporary American
art in your community. We also have a resource section in our website to
place your link if you are interested. I¹ll be in contact with you soon to
discuss other ways we can work together!
