Director, Digital Services Initiatives
The University of Virginia Library seeks a creative, energetic leader to
facilitate the integration of digital and traditional library services
through implementation of initiatives that arise from a program called
Library of Tomorrow (LofT). LofT is a vision to transform the traditional
library into the model University research library for the future.
Library planning teams have made recommendations to guide this stage of
program development (http://staff.lib.virginia.edu/LofT/).
Environment: The University Library system consists of eleven libraries,
with independent libraries for health sciences, law, and business. The
libraries serve 12,000 undergraduates, 6,000 graduate students and 1,000
teaching faculty. The Library's homepage can be accessed at
http://www.lib.virginia.edu. Thomas Jefferson's Academical Village and
the historic Grounds provide an inspiring background for teaching,
learning, and research.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for
Information Technology, the Director of Digital Services Initiatives
provides leadership for implementation of the Library of Tomorrow planning
team recommendations. Creates innovative approaches to implementation
within the broad framework of recommendations. Ensures integration of
traditional and digital priorities. Coordinates major program components
that include internal communication strategies, a centralized production
facility, new digital content policies, metadata and standards for content
development, and new models for information delivery. Develops model
information communities. Facilitates the development of appropriate
guidelines, standards, and mechanisms for setting priorities for building
and acquiring digital collections. Coordinates the development of a
University Library portal by working with various Library and University
departments.
Qualifications: Master's degree in library/information science or a
related field. Demonstrated increase of responsibility in positions
involving administration and/or technology, particularly in digital
information coordination. Ability to coordinate a large-scale initiative
for organizational change. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of
digital library concepts. Understanding of, and commitment to, library
technology. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication
skills. Strong customer service orientation. Commitment to professional
growth and development. Demonstrated commitment to diversity. Extensive
experience working in a research library environment preferred.
Salary and Benefits: Salary competitive, depending on qualifications.
General faculty status. The University of Virginia offers excellent
benefits, including 22 days of vacation and TIAA/CREF and other optional
retirement plans.
