The quality of the information in the ICA database is
superlative--beyond what you would find in any other database I know of.
When we agreed to collaborate with the Index on a project to photograph,
digitize, and index all iconographically significant images from the
Library's medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, we were as interested in
the descriptions as in the images. Images are great--but only if you can
get to them by multiple access points, and only if you get a decent
description of what you are looking at. All the ICA indexers are art
historians, and the descriptions they create incorporate original
research as well as citations to published research.
For novice searchers, I would recommend using the Simple search, and
AND'ing two or three words, to get some records. Look at these records,
get an idea of the layout of the records, and then go out on some of the
generously supplied hyperlinks. To see records for Morgan manuscripts,
do a search for:
morgan AND public (finds all records with "public" images attached)
That said, I think your idea of a library guide is a good one, and would
be glad to send you the notes I've made on using the Index.
