Eileen,
I am interested in this dialog, since we have had good success with
the new Web version of Dyabola. I originally asked Biering &
Brinkmann for a password that could accommodate 2-3 simultaneous
users. They told us in an e-mail that we should use the password I
had procured for myself for our users. We have a subscription to the
CD-rom version; for last year at least, that included the web version
also. It seems it is all a package now; the price?
The password is given out when requested from the FAL Reference desk.
We have found that we can use the password from most any access
point, but we have been unable to sustain more than one usage in a
classroom at a time. I spoke to B&B about that problem at ARLIS/LA
and the rep indicated that more capabilities were coming, including
the long awaited "BACK" capability in the "Subject tree" of the
Realkatalog. Our access has included the Census and we are also able
to open images via the web version. The trick is to find a record
with images, such as Ara Pacis.
Our classical archaeology grads and faculty are most eager to use the
Web version; the CD version sees little use. I have been offering
classes recently in using Resources in Ancient Art, including
Dyabola, so the users have become more savvy with the interface.
I have a web guide
(www.lib.virginia.edu/fine-arts/guides/dyabolaweb.html) if you would
like to take a look. I use this to teach end-users. I would be
interested in hearing more about the use of this database.
yours,
lucie
