From Image to Vision, Selected Books from the Robert M. Doty Photographic Library
A Gift to The Currier Gallery of Art
Last year the Art Reference Library at The Currier Gallery of Art was the beneficiary of a generous gift from the Doty family of 1200 photography books and related archives in memory of the late Robert McIntyre Doty (1933-1992). Doty began his career in photography with a museum exhibition entitled The Interpretive Photography of Lewis W. Hine and an essay of the same title published in the George Eastman House (Rochester, New York) periodical, Image in 1957. He went on to develop a unique vision of photography and the important role it could play in a fine arts museum collection.
Robert "Mac" Doty, Currier director from 1977 to 1987, was instrumental in building the museum's photography collection, continuing a legacy of internationally recognized contributions to the history of photography begun while he was curator for the George Eastman House (1956-1963) and the Whitney Museum of American Art (1966-1974). The photographs displayed in this gallery were acquired during and in honor of Doty's directorship. Doty was influential in promoting photography as an art form during a time when many art historians failed to recognize its value beyond evidential record. Doty's pioneering scholarship as evidenced in such publications as The Photo-secession (1960) and Photography in America (1974), lends a personal view to the photographers and historians that shaped the history of photography. The public recognition of photographers such as Paul Strand, Lucas Samaras, Harry Callahan, Lewis W. Hine, and Diane Arbus was enhanced by Doty's publications and exhibitions.
Doty's interest and promotion of local, New England artists was evident during his tenure as Director of The Currier Gallery of Art, where he exhibited the works of photographers Rollie McKenna, Bill Finney, Gary Samson, Hope Zanes and Lotte Jacobi. This exhibition represents some of the highlights of this extraordinary photographic resource. The Doty library includes a wide range of important publications on the history of photography from its beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century to continued experimentation in the 1980s. Comprised of rare first editions, unusual exhibition catalogues and many publications that Doty wrote or was closely involved with, the library will provide students, photographers and scholars with one of the most important resources on the art of photography in Southern New Hampshire. Later this year museum visitors will be able to browse the library shelves of this important New England collection.
