Ray Anne ... and all ARLIS colleagues,
Good idea. A roundtable discussion on these issues vital to our profession, I think, would work extremely well.

I agree that open and free discussion is critically important to all ARLIS/NA
members. I want to give some rational input on the whole issues that Ditchburn
brought up, but I will need to do so at a later date.
I think we have read and sent angry and defensive responses (and I include my
own and
Mr. Keaveney's below) to these issues because of the way in which Mr. D.
forumlated
his remarks. Anyone will become defensive and angry when attacked. And
attack he
did. Our buttons were pushed and many of let each other know that.
The fact that our buttons WERE pushed is a signal that we need to examine the
issues
Mr. D. brought to the e-table. This could even be a session at a future
ARLIS/NA
conference. Now, wouldn't a debate format be interesting? I don't think
ARLIS/NA
has ever had a debate before. Food for thought.
My professional life has been richly blessed by membership in ARLIS/NA and
affiliation with all the professional colleagues I have met in the years I
have been
affiliated with the association. I certainly understand my own and others'
feelings
at the manner in which Mr. D. began what could (and I hope will) become a
serious and
productive discussion.
