Now that summer is here and I'm catching up on
backlogged projects, I'd like to make a quick report
to ARLIS members of highlights from the College Art
Association conference held in Chicago in early March.
ARLIS/NA and the College Art Association are affiliated
societies, and I attended the CAA conference as
ARLIS-appointed liaison between the two organizations.

UPCOMING CAA CONFERENCE LOCATIONS--
I often hear the wish expressed that ARLIS/NA might
meet concurrently with CAA. While this may or may not
be a practical option, I provide a list of future CAA
conference locations for the benefit of any ARLIS
regional groups that would like to explore the
possibility.
2002, Philadelphia (February 20-24, 2002)
2003, New York
2004, Seattle
2005, Atlanta
2006, New York
2007, San Francisco
2008, (tentative) Kansas City
To those art librarians in CAA cities, I also suggest
the possibility of presenting an ARLIS-sponsored
session at the conference. Or, since CAA is
increasingly receptive to proposals for sessions
off-site, you might consider hosting a program at
your library.
****************************************************
In general, the CAA Chicago conference was large
(almost 5,000 attendees) and stimulating. This
was the first year that new program categories
were reflected in the sessions. The three broad
categories now include: historical studies (pre-20th
century); contemporary issues/studio art (including
theory, criticism and visual culture); and
educational and professional practices (addressing
practical concerns of teachers, critics, museum
professionals and practising artists). I am hopeful
that the "practices" category may open the door
to more sessions of interest to both art librarians
and art researchers.
In a separate memo I will be posting my notes from
the session entitled "Developing a Session for the
Annual Conference Program," presented by members of
the CAA Annual Conference Committee.
You will also be hearing more soon about plans for
the upcoming Philadelphia conference session.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about CAA,
the Chicago conference, or developing sessions for
future conferences, please feel free to contact me.
