POSITION: Non-Print Cataloger
DEPARTMENT: Technical Services
REPORTS TO: Head of Technical Services
SUMMARY: The Non-Print Cataloger is primarily responsible for the
cataloging and classification of slides, audio recordings, and other
nonprint formats acquired for the Library collection. The position is also
responsible for the maintenance of records on the Library's DRA and CASPR
systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Slide cataloging:
Performs original cataloging on newly acquired or shot slides on the
Library's locally maintained CASPR Library World system, using MARC based
bibliographic descriptions, the Art and Architecture Thesaurus for subject
access, and a variant of the Tansey classification scheme for call numbers.
Performs appropriate authority control on items in the database.
In conjunction with the Head of the Slide Library, determines the
cataloging needs of the slide collection.
Upgrades online records to full level as appropriate.
Conducts retrospective conversion of older offline records.
Updates and keeps current the locally modified Tansey classification scheme.
Conducts reclassification as appropriate.
Recommends slides to be ordered for the collection.
Provides reference services to Slide Library users on an as needed basis.
Audio recordings/nonprint format cataloging:
Performs origingal and copy cataloging of audio recordings (primarily CDs)
using OCLC, DRA, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject
Headings, the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2nd ed. rev., the Library of
Congress Rule Interpretations, and Music Cataloging Decisions.
Resolves problems arising from obsolete, conflicting, or incorrect
cataloging from the past.
Performs original or copy cataloging on other types of materials (eg. video
recordings or monographs) as required.
Keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and of trends in cataloging
practices. Applies new rules and interpretations as appropriate. Brings
changes to the attention of others as appropriate for implementation or
discussion.
Participates in departmental meetings and deliberations, assisting in the
delineation of policies and procedures relating to cataloging.
Other duties:
Under the general direction of the Coordinator of Collection Development,
participates with other librarians in collection development and faculty
liaison activities.
Under the general direction of the Head of Reference and Instruction
Services, provides reference, research, and instruction services to Library
users on a limited regular basis.
Participates in College and professional activities.
Represents the Library in local, regional, and national consortia.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school with
course work in cataloging; knowledge of MARC bibliographic and authorities
formats; knowledge of AACR2 and the Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations; minimum of three years original cataloging experience on
an integrated library system and on an online bibliographic utility (OCLC
preferred) at the professional level; background in fine art or related
humanities discipline, with an undergraduate or higher degree strongly
preferred; ability to work both cooperatively and independantly; ability to
work flexibly, energetically, and creatively in a busy, changing
environment; ability to set goals and manage various assignments
simultaneously.
Preferred: Previous work experience in a slide library; working knowledge
of one or more Western European language and/or the ability to catalog in
unfamiliar languages with the aid of a dictionary; undergraduate or higher
degree in music or the equivalent broad knowledge, training, or experience;
demonstrated knowledge of music cataloging; knowledge of library
classification systems, preferably Dewey Decimal Classification.
ENVIRONMENT:
Columbia College Chicago is a diverse, open admissions, urban institution
of 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts and
communications in a liberal education setting.
SALARY: $35,000 - 40,000 depending upon qualifications.
