Dear Librarians,
I need your help and advice, and I thank you in
advance for your consideration.
Let me first introduce myself.
My name is Virginie de Mortemart. I am French. I am a
Librarian. And I am looking for a position.
I have worked as a Librarian for the International
Council of Museums (ICOM) in Paris. I have also worked
as an Electronic Resources Librarian Assistant for the
Hazen Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York. I have trained the staff on how to use the
Internet and electronic resources, conducted classes
using PowerPoint presentation, searched and evaluated
web pages, performed reference service, and I have
provided textual link and HTML maintenance for the web
site.
My next position was an Assistant Webmaster for Louis
Vuitton Headquarters, Paris. I have designed, updated,
and promoted their web site. I have analyzed the
existing traffic on the site, and created statistics,
and I have generated reports in French and English for
the Intranet.
I enjoy my profession and I really would like to
pursue my career in this direction.
Now, here is my "problem". I studied 5 years in Paris,
including 2 years at the School of Information and
Library Science.(As a full-time student, around 35
hours per week, many courses and exams). It's a
valuable degree. It allows me to get good positions in
France with competitive salaries.
Unfortunately, I was told that I only had the
equivalence of a Bachelor's degree in Library Science,
and that holds me back.
Could you please advise me? What do you think I should
do? Is there a chance for me to be hired with my
background? It seems everytime I have an interview for
a position in the USA, they don't want to consider my
French degree, even if I have the right education. I
was told to go back to school for an MLS, but I am not
convinced: I would consider an advanced degree for
the right reasons, if it's to learn new things, but I
am afraid I will go through the same courses again, to
get the same education!
I am becoming discouraged, I have a great deal of
energy to give, as well as dedication and quality
performance.
As for my visa H1-B, it still valid and transferable,
and I can renew it for 3 more years!
I hope you won't mind this unusual request. (Between
Librarians :-)).
I thank you for your advice and your time! Here is my
resume for your information (attached in Word format).
I look forward to hearing from you,
Sincerely,
Virginie
PS. I shall be glad to provide references!
I am looking for a position in New York City, but I
will also consider a position in other cities, like
Philadelphia, and Washington DC areas.
