THE MUSEUM OF AMERICAN FOLK ART, New York, NY
Librarian/Art Research Library
The Museum of American Folk Art invites applications for the position of
Librarian for its art research library. The library contains approximately
10,000 volumes on folk art and related fields, including books, periodicals,
auction catalogs and reference works, as well as an archival collection
consisting of photographs, manuscripts, research materials, correspondence,
clippings, and special collections. The purpose of the library is (a) to
support the research activities of the museum’s curatorial and education
staff; (b) to serve as a resource for students in the Museum’s Folk Art
Institute and joint graduate program with New York University; (c) to
provide information for other staff departments, including publications,
development, marketing, and public relations; (d) to provide a service for
the Museum’s members and the general public; and (e) to further the
continuing education of docents and volunteers.
The Museum is entering a period of dynamic change as a result of the
construction of a new building at 45 West 53rd Street in Manhattan, which is
scheduled to open to the public in early December 2001. The Librarian will
participate in the development of policies and programming for the new
library facility.
Reporting to the Director of the Museum, the Librarian will be responsible
for the administration of the library, including supervision of a volunteer
support staff, and for collections development, reference, cataloging and
preservation.
Qualifications: Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited
program, B.A. degree in a humanities field, and academic training in art
history are required. A minimum of three years of library experience is
required; preference will be given to candidates with managerial or
supervisory experience. Experience cataloging in a national database and
strong computer skills, including database searching, are required.
Knowledge of the folk art field is not required but is desirable.
