The city of Buffalo has encountered much change in the last century, which

to and/or changed with Buffalo's evolution? What are the changes in the
artists who have worked in Buffalo and now reside elsewhere? Is there still
a connection to Buffalo for them?

The second event will feature artists currently working in Buffalo. Two
well-established Buffalo artists, two rising artists, and one curator will
contrast their views of the cultural climate in the area. Why do they work
in Buffalo and what keeps them here, as well as what they see for the
future of art in Buffalo? A brief look at these artists' work will also be
included.

Program Three: Children's Workshop
Saturday, April 21, 2001
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library, Niagara Branch
1:00-3:00 P.M.
The third program is an offshoot of the first two and allows for hands-on
creativity. The Niagara Branch is located in the heart of Buffalo's growing
Latino community. The workshop, designed for children 8-12 years old, will
be led by Lillian Mendez, an artist and long-time art educator working and
living in Buffalo's Puerto Rican community. She is well known for her altar
installations and masks, and lately for her Buffalo for last year's Herd
About Buffalo project entitled The Visitor, which stood on the Niagara
Street entrance to I-190. The children's impressions and ties to the
community will be explored in their artwork, which will be displayed in the
Library.
Exploring local and cultural treasures, this series enables Buffalo and
Erie County's public libraries to work cooperatively with major academic
and arts institutions towards the goal of community awareness and pride in
our region's rich artistic heritage. By taking a more active role in the
cultural life of the community through this program series, participating
libraries open their doors and collections to a wider, more diverse
population. This partnership will also enable participating organizations
to reach segments of the community previously unaware of the library as a
cultural destination, as well as promote our community as a vital arts
center.
