To respond to Peter's inquiry above: The Menil Collection Library has
no written policy covering this issue; all decisions are made by the
Librarian on a case-by-case basis. What we have done however is
institute a THIRD option in addition to the artist files and regular
(cataloged) collection. This is a physically-distinct collection named
the "Supplemental Catalogue Collection ('SCC'), for items we don't want
to give full cataloging to yet wish to give individual treatment to in
our library catalogue. So each item in the SCC receives its own
cataloging record: the main entry is the sponsoring institution for the
item (which also serves as the shelving access point); the "call number"
simply consists of the letters "SCC"; title and statement of
responsibility are indicated; no collation is given; and artist names
and/or LC subjects of import to us are given added entries and/or
5xx-level notes. Another note is inserted with the following text:
"SHELVED UNDER INSTITUTION NAME IN SUPPLEMENTAL CATALOG COLLECTION
(SCC)."
hope this helps,
Phil Heagy
