For Immediate Release: Masonic Book Award
The Friends of the Livingston Masonic Library, Incorporated announce a
winner for their 1999-2000 William W. Reese II Memorial Book Award,
presented to an outstanding author working on Masonic or Masonic
related
topics. This premier year, the award winner is Dr. Douglas Smith, the
author of Working the Rough Stone: Freemasonry and Society in
Eighteenth-Century Russia, published by Northern Illinois University
Press
(DeKalb: 2000). Drawing from a wealth of previously inaccessible
archival
resources, Working the Rough Stone is an examination of 18th century
Russian
Freemasonry and provides an analysis of its contributions to the
envisioning
of Russia's political and moral future.
On May 17th, 2001 The Friends will host an Award Reception from 5:30 to
7:30
p.m. at the Chancellor Robert R. Livingston Masonic Library located on
the
14th floor of the Masonic Hall at 71 West 23rd Street in New York City.
The
general public is cordially invited and warmly encouraged to attend.
Refreshments will be served and The Friends will provide tours of the
Livingston Library and assorted lodge rooms to those interested. The
author,
Dr. Douglas Smith, will be available for questions and discussion.
A distinguished panel of Judges reviews all submissions in order to
determine a publication's relevancy and merit. During the Award
Ceremony
two judges will be in attendance: Dr. S. Brent Morris of the Scottish
Rite
Research Society and Mr. Thomas Jackson, Book Reviewer for Northern
Light
(magazine of the Scottish Rite, NJ). The third judge is Dr. Steven
Bullock,
author of the highly acclaimed The Revolutionary Brotherhood:
Freemasonry
and the Transformation of the American Social Order, 1730-1840
(University
of North Carolina Press, 1996).
The Livingston Masonic Library contains substantial holdings of Masonic
and
Masonic related material of scholarly and historical importance such
as:
periodicals, newspapers, books, lodge records, certificates, and other
items. In addition, the Library also houses a significant collection
of
museum quality Masonic artifacts including china, silver, textiles,
painting, furniture and other objects. The Library devotes itself to
maintaining these invaluable historical materials for future
generations of
scholars and historians devoted to Masonic and other fields of
research.
As an independent foundation, The Friends of the Livingston Masonic
Library
was created to raise funds for special projects crucial to the
library's
future such as the archival safeguarding of the collection in order to
prevent deterioration and converting records into microfilm and
computer
readable media. The Friends also host lectures featuring prominent
authors
for public events at the Library. Membership to this organization is
open
to those members of the public interested in Masonic learning. For
