Solo Librarians
Discussion Group
Notes from the Meeting
ARLIS/NA 29th Annual Conference
Los Angeles, CA
Sunday, April 1, 2001
8:00-9:00 a.m.
Approximately 15 librarians gathered for the 1st ARLIS/NA Solo Librarians
Discussion Group. At the beginning of the meeting, introductions were made
by everyone in attendance.
Eumie Imm-Stroukoff began the discussion with time management issues. Paul
Glassman, Laura Harris, and others suggested these tips for prioritizing and
managing time: developing a 6-month plan of goals along with action steps
and deadlines; ensuring that these goals and plans are communicated to
superiors and volunteers/employees; working on special priority projects for
each month; setting aside time once a week for a particular project; and
utilizing overall institutional time frames and schedules.
Next, communication skills were discussed. Nancy Simon suggested writing an
annual report to convey completed projects and upcoming goals to
supervisors. Also stressed was the need for libraries to report their
activities at department heads or staff meetings. A common theme was the
library as a service-orientated facility. A survey was suggested as a
method of determining library services that curatorial and educational staff
feel are important.
The next topic discussed was staffing. Participants made various
suggestions on motivating volunteer or non-professional staff. One popular
suggestion was management by objectives, or conveying the overall goals to
the staff and allowing them to assist in developing and planning these
goals.
Collection maintenance, space issues, weeding, off-site storage, and library
automation were briefly discussed. Rina Vecchiola is planning to automate
the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Library and would like advice. Various
systems were recommended and the use of consortiums discussed.
Everyone agreed that this discussion group should meet again at the 2002
annual conference. Eumie Imm-Stroukoff identified potential future topics
to include outsourcing, use of temporary employees, and work-study interns.
She will compile a list of the group and facilitate future e-mail
discussions. In addition, Paul Glassman, Susan Greening, and Eumie
Imm-Stroukoff will develop an AskARLIS session proposal for the 2002
conference.
