Dear Colleagues,
Among the goals and objectives of the 1996-1999 Strategic Plan was
the creation of a Statistics Task Force, which was charged with
analyzing the type of statistics needed by the membership of the
Society and the possibility of gathering and making available those
statistics via some appropriate means. The Task Force, ably chaired
by Carol Graney, developed a questionnaire, performed a survey which
many of you contributed to, and created a report for the Executive
Board. The Task Force suggested that the Society continue to
investigate the possibility of regularly compiling statistics of
interest to art & architecture librarians as well as the possibility
of maintaining a database of these statistics which would be made
available to members of the Society. At the Toronto Midyear Executive
Board meeting (Sept. 22-23, 2000) the Board reviewed the report and
decided that due to the wide range of library types, the difficulty
in regularly and consistently gathering the data and maintaining such
a data product, and with the higher priorities of stabilizing
existing member services at this point in the Society's history, that
to proceed with such a plan was not feasible at this time. The Task
Force has been so advised.
There may, however, be a desire within some of the Divisions or
Sections to continue this effort, and such an initiative might be
better suited for success at a more focused level, i.e. the Division
or Section level, and published as an Occasional Paper. I encourage
those members who feel that a statistics initiative should be pursued
to continue their discussions at the Division and Section level at
the Los Angeles conference.
Please note that any surveys or questionnaires sent out to the
membership should be cleared in advance as per ARLIS/NA POLICY NO.:
N-6. SUBJECT: SURVEYS and ARLIS/NA POLICY NO.: A-9. SUBJECT:
COMMUNICATIONS: "All questionnaires and communications sent out
Society-wide shall be cleared through ARLIS/NA Headquarters and the
ARLIS/NA President or Executive Board. These includes questionnaires
generated by Divisions, Sections, Round Tables, or Committees."
My thanks to Carol and the members of the STF for their considerable
efforts on our behalf.
Regards,
Peter Blank
