Hi ARLIS,
The mysterious brown blob in the back of "Andy Warhol's Index (Book)" is a
balloon, which has melted and fused to the paper.
Another piece of information about this book is that it apparently was
designed by Billy Name, Warhol's assistant who did the lighting for most of
his films, and also photographed much of the goings-on there in the 1960s.
There are about 3 books of his work that have been published in the past 10
years. www.billyname.com While his work on the Index book is not attributed,
I've spoken with him about it, and it seems to be a believable story.
Simply, Warhol was too busy to work on it, and he gave all of the materials
to Billy, sent him over to Random House to work with Christopher Cerf on the
layout, and he chose the children's pop-ups, etc. and the balloon. Given
Warhol's methods of work on other projects, this sounds right to me. Billy
also did the layouts for "a, a novel" published by Grove Press in 1968.

Dear John,
Are you on the ARLIS-ListServ? I thought of you immediately when this
appeared this morning. Hope you are well. I am still working at AMICO over
here in Squirrel Hill and enjoying it very much. Art and Archives...what
more could anyone ask for, right? I see the Pitt archives students are
planning another field trip over your way....hope you get some good interns
out of it.
Best to Matt.

former intern
