ASSISTANT MANAGER

Assist in the Management of, and assume integral responsibilities in the
operation of Printed Matter, Inc., one of the world's oldest and largest
arts organizations devoted to the distribution and representation of
artists' books and related publications. The Assistant Manager constitutes a
key position, and participates fully in Printed Matter's principal
functions: maintaining and representing an inventory of over 8,000 titles
from some 4,000 separate suppliers (most on consignment); the operation of
both a retail store, a mail order service, and a distribution service; and
acting as a general public and professional resource for artists'
publications.
Responsibilities include clerical work, customer service, assisting in the
maintenance of customer and supplier accounts, supervision of bookstore
assistants and interns, and participating in the general organization and
maintenance of the store and offices. Specific task areas include
supervising and assisting with invoicing, backordering, consigned book
orders, inventory maintenance, accounts receivable notification,
accept/reject correspondences, and much more.
The position demands a high degree of communication with staff as well as
suppliers, artists, art professionals, major clients, and the general
public. It also demands meticulous attention to detail, efficiency and
accuracy, and the ability to manage and implement different tasks and
projects simultaneously. This job would be best suited for someone with an
education, background and/or keen interest in a career in arts
administration and management.
Requirements:
-hardworking; attention to detail; ability to communicate with staff,
customers, and suppliers.
-knowledge of contemporary art and artists; an interest in artists' books
and publications.
-solid writing, composition, and mathematics skills; typing and computer
literacy.
-some physical and manual work required.
-foreign languages helpful.
-must be a U.S. citizen or have valid work visa.
-must commit to minimum of two years of employment
-an exceptional work ethic: ability to thrive in a small-staffed, vital arts
organization with a very big job; positive, professional, self motivated, an
ability to get along with fellow staff, and ability to work under pressure.
Hours: 5 days a week (Tuesday through Saturday)
Salary: $27,000 per annum
