Here is an initial list of titles compiled from emails I received in
response to my question about biopics depicting the lives of artists.
Thanks to all who contributed. I will continue to gather titles from the
books and web-sites suggested by various people. "Update" will include
the list in a future issue.

Anthony Franciosa as Goya and Ava Gardner as the Duchess of Alba, directed
by Henry Koster, USA, 1959
2) Camille Claudel
Directed by Bruno Nuytten, France, 1988, with Isabelle Adjani as Claudel
and Gerard Depardieu as Rodin
3) Rembrandt
Directed by Alexander Korda, USA, 1936, with Charles Laughton as Rembrandt
4) Sunday in the Park with George
Directed by James Lapine/Terry Hughes, USA, 1986.
5) Vincent and Theo, directed by Robert Altman, USA, 1990
6) Impromtu
Directed by James Lapine, Great Britain, 1991, with Judy Davis as George
Sand and Hugh Grant as Chopin.
Julie Portman wrote in her email to me that "this one is actually about
George Sand and Chopin, but Delacroix is in there as well."
7) I Shot Andy Warhol
Directed by Mary Harron, USA, 1996.
Julie Portman included although it is "not really biographical about just
Andy." Patrick Jewell concurs that it is "Not really a biopic, but some
good depictions of the time." Susan Milstein calls it "a fascinating view
of his life and the New York art scene during the 1960s."
8) Andrei Rublev
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, USSR, 1966
9) Cradle Will Rock
Directed by Tim Robbins, USA, 1999.
Patrick Jewell wrote that it is "not really a biopic but has some funny
stuff with Diego Rivera and the Rockefeller murals."
10) Pirosmani
Directed by Georgi Shengelaya, USSR, 1971. About the Georgian artist Niko
Pirosmani, portrayed by Avtandil Varazi.
11) Titan--Story of Michelangelo
Directed by Robert Flaherty, USA, 1950. Documentary of
Michaelangelo with voice-over by Frederic March
12) Moulin Rouge
Directed by John Huston, USA, 1952, with Jose Ferrer as
Toulouse-Lautrec.
13) Love is the Devil
Directed by John Maybury, Great Britain, 1998, with Derek Jacobi
as Francis Bacon.
14) Van Gogh, directed by Maurice Pialat, France, 1991
15) Carrington
Directed by Christopher Hampton, Great Britain, 1995, with Emma
Thompson as Dora Carrington.
16) The Affairs of Cellini
Directed by Gregory La Cava, 1934, with Frederic March as Benvenuto
Cellini and Constance Bennett as Duchess of Florence.
Martha Smith characterizes as "a very silly film" which also stars Fay
Wray as one of Cellini's love interests and Frank Morgan, who played
Professor Marvel and the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz.
17) Surviving Picasso
Directed by James Ivory, USA, 1996 with Anthony Hopkins as Picasso
18) Wolf at the Door
Directed by Henning Carlsen, France/Denmark, 1987 with Donald
Southerland as Gauguin
19) Edvard Munch

20) Utamaro and His Five Women
Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, Japan, 1946 with Minnosuke Bando as
Utamaro.

Directed by Julian Schnabel, USA, 1996, with Jeffrey Wright as
Basquiat and David Bowie as Warhol.
23) Agony and the Ecstasy
Directed by Carol Reed, USA, 1965, with Charlton Heston as
Michaelangelo and Rex Harrison as Pope Julius II.
24) Artemisia
Directed by Agnes Merlet, France, 1997 with Valentina Cervi as
Artemisia Gentileschi.
25) Goya in Bordeaux
Directed by Carlos Saura, Spain/Italy, 1999 with Francisco Rabal
as Goya.
26) Pollock
Directed by Ed Harris, USA, 2000, with Ed Harris as Pollock and
Marcia Gay Harden as Lee Krasner.
27) Vincent
Directed by Paul Cox, Australia/Netherlands, 1989, with John Hurt
as the voice of Van Gogh.
28) Lust for Life
Directed by Vincent Minnelli, USA, 1956, with Kirk Douglas as Van
Gogh.
29) Frida
Directed by Paul Leduc, Mexico, 1984 - Frida Kahlo
30) Jennifer Hehman recalls a film based on a Virginia Woolf novella
about a Cape Cod artists' colony based on William Merrit Chase's life, but
can't recall the name of the movie.
