We have a 1979 edition of Human Dimension and Interior Space : A Source
Book of Design Reference Standards by Julius Panero, Martin Zelnik.
Amazon.com shows: (Hardcover - December 1989) for $31.96 .
In the 1979 ed., there are drawings for "Work and Craft Centers," which
includes painting workstations w/ easels, drafting workstations w/ tables,
high and low workbenches, etc. This sounds like part of what you're
looking for. (The new edition might have more detail and more types of
workstations.) Note: The same drawings and numbers are in the 1995 ed. Of
"Time-Saver Standards for Housing and Residential Development," by the same
authors.

>This question is for Art & Design Schools and Colleges/Universities with
>art/design programs. I am trying to ascertain if there are any standards or
>guidelines for space planning re: teaching studios and work areas for
>artists/designers in particular disciplines....or if someone has produced
>guidelines for their own institutional space planning.
>
>How much space does a student need if they are taking a Drawing & Painting
>class or a Ceramics class? Ideally, I'd like to see a chart which lists the
>net assignable square metres (nasm) or net assignable square feet (nasf) per
>student for a wide range of art & design disciplines...
>
>Drawing & Painting
>Ceramics
>Fibre or Textiles
>Industrial Design
>Environmental Design
>Communication & Design
>Advertising
>Architecture
>etc.
>
>With such standards/guidelines, one should be able to work out objectively
>how big a Drawing & Painting studio should be to accommodate 30 students
>plus space for the model/display stand, washout area, etc.
>
>OCAD is designing a new facility and the space planner is of the opinion
>that there are no standards, broken down by art/design discipline. I find it
>hard to believe that nothing exists.
>
>I hope someone can help.
