We catalogers are having a bit of an early discussion on the ARTNACO
list on how we might deal with the revised LC subject headings that
LC started using on February 1st. I don't think any of us catalogers
have seen a live example but we're trying to apply the headings in
our own work. And of course we're thinking about all of the existing
records.
A note has been on ARLIS-L already about the revision of memos 1148
and 1250 of the Subject cataloging manual. They can be seen in PDF
files available from http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/artcat.html
If you are interested in reading the discussion so far, you can go
to http://forums.nyu.edu -- go into forum "artnaco" as a visitor and
you can "read messages." There are only a half dozen or so at the
moment. If you have comments or questions, we'd be happy to hear
them (I guess you'd have to send the message to me to forward to the
artnaco list unless you ask to join artnaco, or you can get a general
conversation started on ARLIS-L).
We catalogers are often torn about the appropriate venue for detailed
conversations about cataloger stuff. I hope if you are interested in
these early discussions that you will visit the archive for artnaco
and read the messages. We'd be most pleased if the conversation could
be as broad as possible.
