Library Instruction Sharing
I recently contributed a lesson plan with hands-on exercises for
students to experience the information seeking strategy I was teaching.
My chapter is entitled “The Visual Arts; a Unique Rx” and it is part of
the recently published book Creative Strategies for Library Instruction
in the Arts, Literature, and Music (c2001); the seventh title in the
Active Learning Series from Library Instruction Publications. Lorelei
Tanji, another ARLIS/NA member, also contributed a chapter to the book
entitled “Studio Arts.”
This is a book of sharing and I believe it is going to save me lots of
preparation time. All of us who are responsible for instructing
students spend a great deal of time teaching them about libraries, how
to find information, and about how these two go hand in hand. But how
much do students remember when they walk out the door?
The editor of Library Instruction Publications is strongly committed to
sharing work and helping students achieve real learning by providing a
structured opportunity to “experience” information seeking. Each
chapter or lesson plan includes active learning exercises with all the
required steps listed. One exercise is included in the text of a book
as an example, the remainder are on an accompanying disk so the
exercises can easily be customized to fit the needs of individual
libraries.
The editor of the series, Marilyn Whitmore, is the former Coordinator of
Library Instruction at the University of Pittsburgh Libraries. She
invites librarians from a variety of sizes and types of libraries to
contribute lesson plans in order to be able to share a wide range of
instructional approaches. Contact her via email [log in to unmask] for more
information on this or any of the other titles. She told me she often
sends a sample chapter as an attachment so librarians can preview the
publications.
