Eumie:
The Craft & Folk Art Museum Library that I developed and worked in for 21
years as a "lone librarian" (usually--but not always--with lots of volunteers
and some part-time paid clerical help) closed in 1997 and I have been working
as a cataloger at the L.A. County Museum of Art since then. In 1980 I
presented a paper on one-person libraries at the ARLIS conference and in 1983
presented a paper at the AAM conference on cost-effective management for
librarians working in small museums. I also covered this topic as a guest
lecturer at a special libraries course at UCLA 1992-1994. There used to be a
periodical called The One-Person Library, which I think has ceased
publication. The Special Libraries Association is very supportive of
one-librarian libraries, as many of their members are in that situation. If
your meeting happens at a time when I can come, I'd love to join you. Being
in a one-librarian library offers you the very best and the very worst of
librarianship--but on balance my experience was mostly very good and I'd like
to encourage those who may feel isolated in this type of job.
