Dear Mary,
For the second time I have tried to send this notice to ARLIS-L. I do not
want to send out a duplicate message, but I must be doing something wrong as
I generated an Outlook error when I attempted to send this today. I also
attempted to send this message on the 21st, but it has not appeared on the
list. I did receive in both cases a message that this message had been
received by the list, but it did not appear on the list. I must be making
some dumb mistake. If you can easily detect it i would appreciate knowing
what I am dong wrong. If not I will just start over and send again.
Thanks, Tom

Subject: Reference and Information Services Section program at LA
Conference Attendees: Mark Your Calendars: Added Program
The Reference & Information Services Section (RISS) meeting on Monday, April
2, 10-11:30 A.M, will feature presentations that were made at one of
ALA-Midwinter's (January, Washington, DC) most popular sessions. Don't miss
it! Details follow:
"The Virtual Reference Desk: Is it Here?"
The Internet is expanding at a dramatic rate and is creating a fundamental
change in the way people collect information and acquire knowledge. In the
United States alone, over 45 million households were connected to the
Internet in 1999 and the number of users is expected to grow by 25% each
year. With the emergence of Web help services, libraries are no longer the
lone providers of information; in fact, reference statistics in libraries
throughout the country have been on a steady decline. Today's researchers
need to find quickly information that is usable, relevant, authoritative,
and verifiable. To meet that need, libraries must adapt our reference
services and make them available in an environment that is not bound by time
or physical space.
Speakers:
Joan Stahl, "Joan of Art," Smithsonian American Art Museum
"Collaborative Digital Reference Service: Library of Congress and Member
Libraries"
Susan McGlamery, Metropolitan Cooperative Library System, Los Angeles County
"Creating a Consortial Chat and Collaborative Browsing Service"
Nancy O'Neill, Santa Monica Public Library
