A festscrift for M. Ugur Derman, just published by Sabanci University,
represents an important addition to the scholarly literature in the
study of Islamic calligraphy and other arts of the book.

   M. Ugur Derman armaGani: altmiSbeSinci yaSi mUnasebetiyle sunulmuS
tebliGler = M. Ugur Derman Festschrift: Papers Presented on the
Occasion of his Sixty-fifth Birthday. Ed. by irvin Cemil Schick
(Istanbul: Sabanci Universitesi, 2000). 618 pp. : col. ill.
ISBN 975-8362-10-0 price: 70m Turkish lira (ca. US$100)

This splendid volume includes 36 articles (14 in English, 21 in Turkish,
and one in French), an introduction and postscript by the editor, and
numerous illustrations, most of them in color.

The articles I've read are substantial and represent a variety of topics
that will be of interest not only to students of the arts of the book,
especially calligraphy and illumination, but also to those interested
in other aspects of the cultural history that is manifested in books and
the written word. See below for the table of contents.

The M. Ugur Derman Festschrift is available from Turkish book-sellers,
such as
