Dear Sir/Madam,
I shall be most grateful for your help.
I am writing a biography of Norman Garstin (1847-1926), who was a
British painter of the Newlyn school.
I know the whereabouts of those of his pictures in the which are in
public galleries in the British Isles, and have looked at almost all of
them. However, I would like to know whether there are any of his pictures
in American galleries (or elsewhere). In view of the vast collections
housed in American galleries, there must surely be some, especially as he
visited Canada in 1891 and painted there.
How do I go about posting a notice to art librarians asking whether
they know the whereabouts of any pictures by Garstin? The library at the
Art Institute, Chicago, suggested that such a notice was the best way of
obtaining information.
Your assistance will be very much appreciated.
Yours faithfully
Dr. Richard Pryke (University of Liverpool)
