The Department of Library and Information Science at the University of
Pittsburgh will offer a class entitled ART INFORMATION MANAGEMENT this
coming Summer Semester. The course, to be taught by Ray Anne Lockard
(Head of the Frick Fine Arts Library at the university, will explore
differentmissions, collections, organizational structures, patrons and
services found in a variety of art libraries and visual resources
collections. The course will also cover the types of materials that are
unique to the fields of art and architectural history as well as
electronic media, facilities and space needs, special preservation issues,
and the future of the art information manager.
Field trips may include such collections as the Frick Fine Arts Library at
Pitt, that university's slide collection and Visual Resources Lab, the
Music and Art Department of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Hunt Institute
for Botanical Documentation, the Art Department and Special Collections at
Hunt Library on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, and the
Archives and Study Center of The Andy Warhol Museum.
Students will learn about the field of art information management via
lectures, class discussions, guest speakers and field trips, as well as
readings, assignments, and a class project.
Students enrolled in the course should be able to do the following by the
end of the semester: define the role of the art librarian and visual
resources curator in the context of different types of institutions,
libraries, and collections; understand art and VR collection
administration; know major reference sources; conduct bibliographic and
image searches; apply content analysis to develop bibliographies,
webliographies and imagographies; understand how art information
managers acquire, organize, and serve their collections; and gain an
understanding of scholarship issues in visual arts fields.
The course will meet once per week throughout the twelve week Summer
Session (May 14 - August 4, 2001). For further information, view the
