Marianne--As Martha mentioned--we have an artists monograph section and most
of our users seem to like this. We began by using the N44 class number but,
over the years, we ran into lots of problems when we added the artists'
cutter numbers--we were making up our own and sometimes this did not work
out. One very good thing about the N44 system was that we did not have to
concern ourselves at all with assigning a country of origin classification
number for each artist. As you know, this can be quite a problem,
especially with 20th century artists who live and work all around the world.
But we now use the LC number appropriate for each book and merely put the
artist's name (last and first name--you need both because of names like
"Smith") above this classification number. This system works fairly well
but we are once again stuck trying to assign each artist to a country.
Also, of course, we have have to co-mingle the two systems and this can be
pretty confusing to new library workers and other users. But we're
converting the old N44 system slowly but surely... Hope this info helps...

Subject: Re: 2 cataloging questions
Since Sherman answered the first question I'll take a stab at the second
one. I have noticed that many libraries classify their artist monographs in
N44, followed by an alphabetic cutter for the artists' last name. My
schedule lists that number in parentheses, so it's probably obsolete, (but
hey how many of us out there use obsolete call numbers, just to keep books
on similar subjects together or because someone important insist on it?).
Perhaps someone who uses/used N44 could speak to this.
