There are several series of books about individual artists which are
targeted for the juvenile audience from grade 5 and up:
For the younger audience:
Barron's publishes "Famous Artists" which are paperback, about 30 pages,
nicely illustrated and easy-to-handle size of 8 1/2 x 11 inches. They focus
on such artists as Michelangelo, da Vinci, van Gogh, Miro, Cezanne, etc.
Barron's also publishes a "Great Artists" series which is slightly smaller
in format 7 x 9 1/2 inches, also paperback and about 30 pages in length with
sections on the artist and the times, life, vision, and influence. There is
not a wide selection of illustrations of the artist's work, however.
Chelsea House Publishers puts out a "World's Great Artists Series",
hardcover, 8 x 8 inches, about 75 pages in length with minimal information
on the artist's life, but with descriptions of selected paintings.
For a junior high audience:
Dorling Kindersley publishes paperbacks, 5 x 8 inches, about 140 pages in
length, with profuse illustrations and information on the artist's life and
times.
Abrams "Discoveries" series includes paperbacks on artists with about the
same format as the DK book, but with a Further Reading section in the back
and a Documents section that might include artist's letters, etc.
All of the above books are popular with our young adult audience who don't
want too much information--just enough for a 2 page paper!
