The Brooklyn Museum of Art seeks an experienced,
highly dynamic and committed senior librarian to serve
as the manager of the Wilbour Library of Egyptology.
The Wilbour Library is one of the most comprehensive
research libraries in the world devoted to the study
of Ancient Egypt from its Paleolithic beginnings up to
the Islamic period, with additional research material
on the Ancient Near East. This Wilbour Library, along
with the Art Reference Library and the Museum
Archives, serves the research needs of the Museum
staff (curators, conservators, educators etc). The
Libraries and Archives are open to the public by
appointment and provides reference services to
scholars, students, and the general public working
both on-site and off-site.
Reporting directly to the Principal Librarian, the
Manager of the Wilbour Library will have primary
responsibility for overseeing bibliography, reference
and cataloging activities related to this Library.
Working as a team member with the rest of the Library
staff, the Manager will also work towards development
of enhanced on-line resources and services to improve
access to the research collections. The Manager will
oversee continued contributions of bibliographic
information to international databases. Working with
the Museum's curatorial staff, the manager will ensure
that the Library maintains a comprehensive collection
for the study of Ancient Egypt.
Duties and Responsibilities - Manage and oversee
collection development, reference and cataloging
aspects to ensure the comprehensiveness of the
research collection; supervise Wilbour Library staff,
interns and volunteers; work with BMA staff to analyze
and strengthen Library resources and services; assist
the Principal Librarian with budget preparation and
management, grant and report writing; work closely
with the Principal Librarian and library staff to plan
for enhanced on-line systems, digitization of select
research materials and other technological
initiatives; assist with planning for renovation and
preservation projects.
Qualifications: M.L.S. and a Masters Degree or the
equivalent in the study of Ancient Egypt. Working
knowledge of at least two foreign languages including
French and German. Experience with MARC cataloging and
the RLIN database; extensive experience with database
and web-based searching. Familiarity with issues and
ongoing developments in Library technology and digital
initiatives. Demonstrated administrative and
organizational abilities, with a minimum of five years
of Library management. Excellent communication skills
(oral and writing). Ability to work effectively in a
team environment and with a diverse user group. Able
to initiate, plan, and implement projects.
