Hi,
I have read the discussions on the artist books issue.
As a professional artist, I am always amazed at how casually the works of
book artists are treated by repositories, whose purpose for being is to
house and provide public access to materials that enlighten and hopefully
elevate mankind. Little effort is ever made to make sure that the work of
living artists is maintained, disseminated and/or preserved. Artist books,
especially in libraries, could have fundamental impact on people who read
books and those who are marginally interested-- like our youth. Artists
books is a medium that is stimulating, provocative, aesthetic and an
expression of associated problems with literacy in general, as well as the
narrow, limited and standardized publishing of books altogether. Where
would any of your institutions be, if the public and patrons agreed that
books or art are too numerous, dusty, awkward or costly to be house
anywhere. Were will your institutions by when ebooks do their work on the
field?
As for the museums--oh well.
Artists books, not unlike other media, need to be preserved and collected.
You are missing an opportunity to enrich and enlighten--especially since,
such a bother could be a real thriller to your audience.
I along with artists probably everywhere, applaud you --if you have the
foresight to collect artist books.
Thank you for your attention.
