DEAN, FACULTY OF LIBERAL STUDIES

The Ontario College of Art & Design requires an outstanding leader in art
and academia to join the College in an important period of institutional
change. The Dean, Faculty of Liberal Studies, is responsible for the
educational leadership, development and supervision of the Faculty of
Liberal Studies. Working collaboratively and in close consultation with the
Deans of the Faculties of Art, Design and Foundation Studies and reporting
to the Vice President, Academic, the Dean will promote effective management
of the College's academic programs, support its educational goals, and
enrich College life.
Summary of Responsibilities
- Direct day-to-day operations of all aspects of the Faculty of Liberal
Studies including curriculum, classroom facilities, teaching and learning
resources, office staff and faculty
- In consultation with Faculty of Liberal Studies faculty, other Deans and
the Vice President, Academic, provide curricular leadership in the Faculty
of Liberal Studies and related academic offerings across the College, as
well as on such curriculum-related matters as academic standards, literacy
and student learning, equity issues, diploma and degree requirements, and
articulation agreements
- In consultation with the other Deans, recommend to the curriculum
management group and the Vice President, Academic teaching schedules and
staffing needs
- Working with Vice President, Academic and Director, Student Services,
ensure the provision of appropriate student advising
- Supervise faculty and support staff, and chair faculty meetings to ensure
effective communication
- Evaluate faculty courses and area curriculum in consultation with the
faculty and meet with faculty on an individual basis to provide feedback and
consultation on their teaching and other responsibilities
- Take a constructive role in course evaluation in conjunction with the
Director, Student Services and faculty evaluation and professional
development in conjunction with the Vice President, Academic
- Meet with support staff on a regular basis to provide feedback and
consultation on their responsibilities and take a constructive role in any
evaluation process
- Manage the development, execution, and communication of College policies
as they pertain to the faculty, staff and students
- Work collaboratively with other Deans and managers to ensure effective
planning and resource management of the College, and to promote effective
College-wide communication
- Oversee the Faculty of Liberal Studies planning and prepare the annual
budget for the area in consultation with the Vice President, Administration
and the Director of Finance
- Participate as required by the President in collective bargaining
processes for the College and assist the College in the implementation of
the College/Faculty Association Memorandum of Agreement
- Consult broadly within the College with administration, faculty, and
staff, and outside the College with other institutional deans and directors,
and with government officials on a variety of issues including educational
policy development, articulation agreements, and exchange agreements
- Maintain an active role in the creative community relating to area of
responsibility (such as participation in professional associations), and
effectively represent externally both the faculty/division and the College
- Prepare reports for the President, the Curriculum Committee, and Council,
as required
- Collaborate and communicate with the offices of the President and
Development & Communication Services on public relations and fundraising
matters
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Terms of Employment:
- Initial appointment will be for a term of five years, with the possibility
of renewal. This position is full-time, including a teaching load of 2
courses for the 2000/2001 academic year. Following the successful completion
of a decanal appointment, there is the guarantee of a permanent full-time
teaching position within the College.
Qualifications:
- Doctorate in art or design history, or cultural studies or an equivalent
area of expertise, or equivalent
- A minimum of five years' teaching experience at the university level, and
a significant record of research and professional activity in the field
- Familiarity with current issues in art and/or design and education, with a
particular sensitivity to the needs of students
- A proven track record of strong educational leadership and administrative
experience
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and the ability to
facilitate consensus
- Demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills
COMPENSATION: $81,558 to $95,932 with an excellent benefits package.
