Dear Stan, - and list, as I take it several people will take pleasure in the
painting by Knud Larsen Bergslien from 1869. I enclose have just scanned it
from a Norwegian Encyclopedia. The original is in a private collection, but
it is frequently reproduced and used in history books, skiing-ads etc.
The artist: Knud L. Bergslien (1827-1908) - Norwegian.
The baby: is Håkon Håkonsson (I don't know how the second letter in these
two words look on an American PC, but it should have been the Norwegian A
with a circle on top, pronounced almost like the "o" in "top"!)
Håkon Håkonsson (1232-57) was the son of king Håkon Håkonsson (how original)
and queen Margareta Skulesdaughter. The brave men who save the little prince
from enemies of his father are "birkebeinere", originally a group of rebels,
but at this time an educated army. I have neither time nor knowledge enough
to give you any further information right now. Perhaps this was sufficient?
Tell me if you cannot open the picture file!

woodblock print) from Norwegian history dealing with the kidnapping of the
infant prince of Norway. It shows soldiers with battle axes skiing through
the woods with a kidnapped baby. Is Can anyone identify this? Our patron
wants to know where the "original" is, and if there is a book with a
reproduction. Any assistance, as usual, gratefully received.
