Thanks you all for many interesting leads on artists, writers, etc. who took
a long time to create masterpieces. Here is a summary of the responses:
Margaret Mitchell, who took 10 years to write Gone with the Wind;
Johannes Brahms's first symphony Op. 68 in C minor - begun in 1862 and
finished in 1876;
Russian artist Alexandr Ivanov. Picture - The appearance of Christ before
people. It took him 20 years to complete the masterpiece;
Carl Ruggles, wrote only a few
pieces but spent years working on them;
There are also many works by Charles Ives that he (Ives) tinkered on over
the years;
Poussin, Pontormo and Pamigianino, Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfort;
Grandma Prisbrey took 20 years to create her "Bottle Village";
Marcel Duchamps;
Sheila Waters illustrations for Dylan Thomas's Under Milkwood;
