Hello all,
FWIW, the Philadelphia prison to which Margaret Klinkow referred was/is
known as Eastern State Penitentiary. It's use as a prison ended in the
1970s, but, after a long period of falling into disrepair, it now is the
focus of a lot of preservation activity. There's a website at
http://www.libertynet.org/e-state
which includes a "virtual reality tour", based on photographs. Al
Capone's cell (he was there briefly) is one of the featured sites. I
haven't taken the VR tour, but on the b&m (that's bricks & mortar) tour,
toilets are visible. The site also offers links--I assume to other
prison sites.
Happy hunting!

P.S. Beaver College sociologist Norman Johnston has written a book
about Eastern State Pen. It's called "Eastern State Penitentiary :
crucible of good intentions:, and was published in 1994 by Philadelphia
Museum of Art for the Eastern State Penitentiary Task Forse of the
Preservation Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. I don't have a copy
ready to hand. I remember it as being illustrated with plans, but can't
say whether it includes drawings or photographs with the level of detail
you require.
