I don't sit on the Ref desk as much as I used to - I'm head of Tech Services
- but the last few months I've come to dislike it because I don't answer ref
questions near as much as computer questions. The printers won't work, the
computers freeze up, etc. I have to go in, turn off the security shield and
see if I can fix whatever is needed. Many times, the problem is beyond the
workstation, but the students expect service. Now we have a workstation
with a scanner, CDRW, and a printer & they are upset that we don't know that
much about it & can't wave a magic wand over it. Why have a scanner if we
can't support it? Why can't we check out the periodicals if the scanner
doesn't work? Well, you never could before we had the scanner, so the rules
haven't changed. Our systems librarian really doesn't know that much about
scanners, etc.; the student lab people say the library is not their
jursidiction, and MIS says they don't know much about that stuff (but give
as much help as they can). Our printers are serviced by an outside company
and we have to rely on whenever they show up. My dream would be to have a
computer tech on staff, but we're short-handed with staff in the traditional
areas without having to add another position. A REAL headache!

Subject: Calling all librarians at Art & Design Schools
Hi,
A couple questions if you have the time:
How many of you are expected to provide computer tech. support (example:
defragging, disc scan, virus protection, security, doctoring crashes, etc.)
in addition to your librarian and/or slide library duties?
What level of support (in terms of time and technicality) do you provide, if
any?
Thanks much!
