We faculty librarians at the University of Pittsburgh have what I would
call a "hybrid" version of faculty status. We finally have a written
policy for sabbatical leaves and a written travel policy that includes a
small amount of funding. We are not, however, evaluated in the same way as
faculty members. 70% of our evals are based on job performance, 20% on
professional development and 10% on community servicce. Our annual
performance reviews are now written in the same way that as those of
faculty members. We undergo a third-year review by the University Library
System Peer Review Committee that determines whether or not we can move on
to the seventh year review. If we pass the seventh year review, we receive
what is called "Expectation of Continuing Employment." The university
administrators refuse to call it "tenure" like they do for teaching
faculty, even though it means the same thing.
