Library Technician (Circulation and Rare Books)

Salary range: $26,866-$37,522 per annum
DUTIES:
The National Gallery of Art Library is seeking applicants for a full-time library technician in the Circulation Section of the Reader Services Department. The incumbent is responsible for a wide range of circulation operations and reader services to the National Gallery of Art curatorial and administrative staff, fellows of the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and all library readers. Provides general Library information and instruction for circulation procedures and use of the Library's facilities; maintains complex online and manual files relating to all circulation functions; assists with the maintenance of the Library's collection and in the retrieval and reshelving of books located in the stacks and other special locations. The incumbent also has primary responsibility for maintaining the arrangement of, and monitoring reader access to, the Library's rare book collection.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must meet the Qualifications Standards Handbook requirements for GS-1411-7. This requires at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is library work which has provided a knowledge of the technical aspects of circulation procedures.
Federal status candidates must also meet the time-in-grade requirements of having been at the GS-6 level for at least 1 year.
Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best qualified candidates. *Applicants must describe their possession of these factors in a supplement to their applications. Failure to address these factors in a supplement will automatically disqualify the candidate from employment consideration.*
1. Knowledge of the organization and services of a research library with emphasis on circulation operations (Selective factor)
2. Knowledge of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules and knowledge of LC classification system
3. Skill and experience in handling rare books
4. Knowledge of art history
5. Familiarity with Western European languages in order to read and transliterate authors and titles
